Are You An Indigo?

What is an “Indigo”?

My wish is to bring awareness to a topic some of you may or may not be familiar with and/or agree with. The term “Indigo” isn’t a word you hear everyday in normal conversation.

If I were to approach you on the street and say “I think you’re an Indigo,” after you looked at me in a peculiar manner, what would be your response? Hopefully after you read this you would react with what would be a favorable “Really? Thanks!”

Indigo people are old souls with great spiritual depth and power. Indigos see things as they really are. They are the first in a crowd to ask, “WHY?” Their integrity and instincts guide them. Authenticity is a must. Indigos are intelligent and intuitive. Anything creative will draw the interest of an Indigo. They see beauty and perfection. An Indigo’s energy can be intensely focused and channeled into many areas: healing, communication, spirituality and personal growth. But it could tilt hard in another direction such as drama and depression.

Indigos are natural intuitives who are capable of guiding themselves. Because they are highly sensitive, they actually FEEL things. This can be an issue especially in a social situation. You feel differently, therefore you act differently. They may believe that they are not accepted and just don’t fit in. That is why many Indigos are loners. But remember that you really are not alone. There are many Indigos out there wishing to connect.

What are “Indigo children”?

This question is best defined by Doreen Virtue and her son Charles Virtue:

“The term Indigo refers to strong-willed, intuitive leaders of all ages. Indigos have an inborn ability to sense whether someone is telling the truth or not, and they only respect people who are honorable, regardless of age, title or rank. Because of their nonconformity, Indigos often buck the system…which is part of their global mission to bring truth and integrity to this world.”

Some would claim that Indigo children have existed throughout time. It is just in the 21st century that we have gained more insight to their existence.

The term “Indigo child” came from Nancy Ann Tappe. Nancy is a teacher and counselor who studied the human auric field (electromagnetic field). She wrote a book called, “Understanding Your Life Through Color.” Through colors in the aura, Nancy found a way to psychologically profile. What she found was that 80% of the children born after 1980 had a new deep blue colored auric field. She called this new color, “indigo.”

According to the 1999 book “The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived” by Lee Carroll and his wife, Jan Tober, the title “indigo children” was originally given to people with the attributes listed below who were born from 1975 through 1995. “The Indigo child is a boy or girl who displays a new and unusual set of psychological attributes, revealing a pattern of behavior generally undocumented before (Carroll and Tober).”

How to Recognize the Indigo Child

They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it). They have a feeling of “deserving to be here” and are surprised when others don’t share that. Self-worth is not a big issue. They often tell their parents “who they are.” They have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice). They simply will not do certain things. They get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and don’t require creative thought. They often see better ways of doing things, both at home and at school, which makes them seem like “system busters” (nonconforming to any system). They seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often difficult for them socially. They will not respond to “guilt” discipline. They are not shy in letting you know what they need.

Indigo children believe they must come forward for a reason. Many have stated that they are here to improve the world in some way. The changes generally involve bringing peace, toppling corrupt institutions, and a shift from allopathic medicine to a greater understanding of more natural alternatives. Indigo children believe in “universal truth” and do not tolerate or understand behaviors or systems that are not in harmony with it.

Now on the flip side, many critics of Indigo children, which includes most of the established science community, say there is a lack of evidence. No legitimate scientific proof. Skeptics point out that there has not been any verifiable research to support the claims. one cynic suggested that Indigos are the offspring of “New Age” parents. Exposed to New Age thinking and spiritual language.
