The Embodiment of Root Chakra Energy

Chakras are energy vortexes located throughout our body. The functioning of the chakras reflects what we think, how we feel and in what manner we respond to conditions in our life.

The root chakra is the first chakra and is located at the base of the spine. It is associated with the color red. This chakra is the root of your being. It is your survival center. This chakra is where your fight or flight response is formed. The root chakra honors you with your sense of safety and security on this earthly journey. The root chakra grounds you to stability in your life.

When your root chakra is functioning properly you tend to experience less worry and stress related anxieties. You feel right with the world. The health of this chakra is associated with your upbringing and early life.

The root chakra begins its development from the moment we are born. Our early formative years should be considered when exploring the health of our first chakra. If there was a lack of security during your childhood or you suffered from any abuse (verbal, mental and/or physical), your root chakra has been imprinted on in a negative way. This will damage your energy field. An imbalance to the energy of the root chakra can leave you vulnerable to illness.

If there is an imbalance in this chakra you may experience depression, anxiety, autoimmune diseases, over or underactive sex drive, fears and/or nightmares. Physical manifestations resulting from imbalance may include but are not limited to problems with the colon, bladder and elimination. You may develop issues with the lower back, legs or feet. Eating disorders (weight loss and/or gain) have been related to root chakra blockages. This makes perfect sense when you consider that your root chakra is your foundation of basic needs such as food, water, shelter and safety.

Symptoms of an Underactive Root Chakra

You may feel disconnected from your body and the world around you. You feel disorganized and lack focus. You may be experiencing depression and/or anxiety when dealing with your responsibilities and interactions with others. There is a lack of discipline for boundaries. You may have financial troubles.

Symptoms of an Overactive Root Chakra

You have a short fuse accompanied by overwhelming feelings of anger. There is a sense of aggression towards other people and life in general. You appear controlling. You lash out when challenged. You need to be regimented. You cannot accept change. You feel your value is determined by materialistic acquisitions.

The root chakra establishes the deepest connection with your physical body, your environment and with Mother Earth. The root chakra is the most instinctual of all the chakras. The energy from this chakra allows us to gather our courage and resourcefulness needed to survive. Our will to live and flourish during difficult times is derived at our base and it is the root chakra that connects us to our ancestors and their spiritual energies.

I have noticed that many of my clients want to skip the work involved in setting a firm foundation with the root chakra and jump right to their crown chakra. They seem to think that is where they gain enlightenment as it is closest to God. However, all chakras are important and are interconnected with each other. It is imperative to establish a firm foundation with your roots deeply grounded in our mother. Otherwise, you have planted on unsettled soil and with the first gust of wind you will topple over. This is why it is necessary to start with your root chakra. When we balance one chakra we create change in another chakra.

We need to begin at our roots or we will lack the stability needed for personal growth and transformation.

It is vital to feel safe and secure in order to change. This is a process and no steps should be skipped. The root chakra is where we draw our life force energy. If you are not properly grounded (rooted), you simply cannot balance the other chakras effectively.

You can change your life by looking at the wisdom in your first chakra. What is holding you back from reaching your highest potential? Are you consumed with emotions of greed, desire or jealousy? Examine your beliefs and expectations. Determine if they are serving you well. Consider your family loyalty, your relationships with friends, neighbors and coworkers.

Are you struggling with trust issues?

Trust is associated with your root chakra. Are you feeling insecure? At some level you may not feel safe. Perhaps there is instability concerning your job and/or finances. Sensing a lack of success with any and every aspect of your life is related to the first chakra.

Once you have considered these questions you can honestly determine if you are experiencing a root chakra imbalance. If so, get that energy flowing with the following recommendations:

1) Think Red

Envision the color red glowing brightly at the base of your spine. Picture this red light extending down your legs and feet grounding you into Mother Earth.

2) Physical Activities

Explore your physical side by trying some grounding yoga poses like savasana (resting pose), tadasana (mountain pose) or vriksasana (tree pose).

3) Affirmations

Repeat the following phrases to yourself: “I am grounded in Mother Earth. I belong to this world. I am safe. I am connected to all that is around me. I trust in the natural flow of life.”

4) Connect with Nature

Go outside, sit under a large tree. Place your back against the trunk and absorb the energy.

5) Eat Red Foods

Consume more strawberries, red cabbage, red apples, beets, radishes, root vegetables, and red meat.

6) Crystals and Gems

Snuggle up with some crystals that correspond to the root chakra. They include Red Jasper, Garnet, Ruby, Black Tourmaline, Bloodstone, and Hematite.

7) Essential Oils

Experience aromatherapy with the following oils: Sandalwood, Rosewood, Ginger, Frankincense, Rosemary, and Cedar.

8) Sound Therapy

Listen to or play music on the Didgeridoo.

9) Burn Baby Burn

Burn red candles. Light a fire (not arson). Fire is cleansing and purifying. Visualize yourself being reborn in the flames.

10) Chakra Healing Meditation

Experience a guided meditation specifically directed toward balancing the root chakra.

    1. There are ways to do it without spending any money. YouTube has tons of really great free guided meditations and they also have something called binaural beats. That is where I started. But you do need headphones to listen to binaural beats but they also have something similar called isochronic tones to listen to that do not require headphones. And because it’s on YouTube it’s al free. Physical exercise and housework are also free ways to balance your root chakra and is equally if not more effective.
