Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass, formed when molten lava cools so quickly in water that it doesn’t have time to crystallize. It has a glossy appearance and is silica-rich in composition. Black is the most common color for obsidian but it can appear in shades such as gray, dark brown or green and come in varieties including snowflake, mahogany, peacock, gold sheen and rainbow.
This powerhouse stone embodies all the compressed fiery energies of its genesis. Obsidian is well-known as “Dragonglass,” one of the two substances (dragonglass and valerian steel) capable of killing White Walkers on the popular television series, Game of Thrones. One key scene from the hit show may indicate that valerian steel was forged with dragonglass.
The Valyrians were familiar with dragonglass long before they came to Westeros. They called it “Zirtyl yierzyll,” which translated to “frozen fire” in Valyrian, and eastern tales tell of how their dragons would thaw the stone with dragonflame until it became molten and malleable. The Valyrians then used it to build their strange monuments and building without seams and joints of our modern castles. When Aegon the conqueror forged his Seven Kingdoms, he and his descendants would often decorate their blades with dragonglass feeling a kinship with the stone. The royal fashion for dragonglass ornamentation soon spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms to those wealthy enough to afford it. Hilts and pommels were and are the most common decoration for dragonglass if too brittle to make a useful crossguard. Indeed, its very brittleness is what relegate it to the great houses and the most successful merchants.
In both the fantasy world of Westeros and in the real realm of crystal healing, the powers of obsidian are legendary.
Since Paleolithic times obsidian was used to make arrowheads and other tools. Indigenous peoples revered obsidian both for its practical usefulness and its mystical power. The Aztecs used obsidian to heal wounds and considered it to be the ‘source of life.’ The Mayans made magic mirrors from polished obsidian. Today, obsidian is still used for some of these same reasons by crystal healers and energy workers.
