The Path to Enlightenment

The path to Enlightenment sounds like it would be such a positive and uplifting experience, doesn’t it?

But for those of us traveling down the road to find our true authentic self soon discover that this journey is not all about sunshine and roses.

There are some major hurdles that one must recognize and overcome before we break through and evolve into enlightened souls.

These steps of necessary growth can be quite difficult. They bring to our conscious awareness that there are aspects of self requiring change.

Change in itself can be a scary proposition.

But when we add the realization discovered through self-analysis and soul searching that these changes pertain only to me, myself and I, well, this epiphany can foster a variety of reactions. For some the awareness is entirely overwhelming.

For those people they are inclined to choose the path of least resistance. They will stop dead in their tracks. The search is over. They have decided it is much easier to remain as is. They are unwilling to acknowledge their human frailties.

They are unable to push past the harsh realities of inner reflection.

Their security zone becomes threatened. They refuse to partake in any part of the process that casts a spotlight upon any qualities of self that need to be tweaked, realigned or shifted. They shut it down from fear. Fear of their truth.

For those determined to evolve and ascend on their journey to Enlightenment, I commend you. The struggle is real.

Being honest with yourself can be a daunting experience but honesty with ourselves is the first crucial step we must take no matter how uncomfortable and/or painful.

You may have heard the saying, “If you do not like your view, clean your windows.”

This is a time of awakening.

We must awaken to what is. Not what we wish it could be. Not what we want it to be but what really is.

So How Do I Reach Enlightenment?

The best way to achieve an unbiased overview of reality and implement change is to kick your ego to the curb. Understanding the mechanics of ego is useful and necessary.

Your ego is not a bad thing but it is definitely a deterrent when seeking Enlightenment. The ego is an extremely strong yet fragile psychological aspect that strives for dominance.

Who we think we are, our likes/dislikes and our beliefs are the primary functions of ego.

It is our mentally constructed sense of self that doesn’t take kindly to being invaded and dismantled in any shape, form or fashion. It will fight for control as it considers itself perfect just the way it is.

We must let go of our egoic identity in order to allow ourselves to heal and initiate transformation to a higher level of consciousness.

When we release ourselves from the clutches of ego we are able to see clearly and feel deeply on a different level.

With the collapse of our ego-driven self we find our thoughts and actions are established from a higher vibration. This is a humbling prophecy that encourages our journey toward the light. We are drawn in a distinct direction. There is a sense of knowing.

Doubt has been replaced by discernment.

We feel a strength in our convictions and as such we are comfortable to explore topics of contention that in our past we would have shelved but now we are ready and willing to tackle.

For myself this involved forgiveness and my need for resolution from issues that had tormented my soul.

Enlightenment does not mean that you suddenly and miraculously forget any and all hurt that has ever been inflicted.

It means releasing the burden from your heart. It is knowing that by carrying that pain it has been allowed to continue. You have consciously or unconsciously exacerbated more internal conflict and turmoil.

Step outside of yourself and examine those encounters of discomfort.

In this moment, who is suffering?

You are.

Do you believe that person (whoever it was) that wronged you is losing sleep?

I doubt it.

I would bet they have not given you a second thought.

Ask yourself why are you feeding energy to a negative situation that you have no control over.

Harboring hatred makes your transition impossible.

Release that burden.

Make peace with your past.

Take that mind, body and spiritual energy and put it to making a better you along your path to Enlightenment.

Have you ever woken up late and thought that you were behind schedule?

You shoot out of bed and hit the ground with your feet already moving. But have you ever noticed how you feel on those days?

You feel exhausted, defeated and in a bad mood. You put your shirt on inside out and spill coffee all over the counter. The day just starts off badly. You think that you would like to go back to bed and start over. This is an example of when your life is running you rather than when you are in control of your life.

Yesterday was one of those mornings for me. I awoke with a start, sitting bolt upright in bed, sweating and panting like I had been running all night. I wasn’t particularly late but my body was on edge. I immediately turned my awareness inwards. I thought to myself, “I don’t want to start every morning like this. I want to have time to breathe and be myself rather than rush to get ready so I can rush to my job so I can rush to come home and do it all over again.”

So I made the choice to transition from deep sleep to a waking state. I did this by laying back down, closing my eyes and becoming aware of my breath. And I only did it for two minutes.

Those two minutes were enough to change my whole day around from negative and frantic, to positive and empowered.

Some may call this mindfulness meditation, and if done properly it can be considered just that. However, if you don’t care for the term meditation, think of it as a period of adjustment or transition.

Your brain is not like your laptop; an automatic machine that turns on and off quickly and efficiently. You are only human and your mind needs flexibility and rest. You should take this time to allow your mind and body to transition out of and also into sleep.

If you don’t already have a regular meditation practice, this will allow you to establish one. If you currently meditate, this will add more meditation time to your day.

Give yourself permission to be in control of your life.

Try to spend a few moments between waking up and getting out of bed every morning. You will definitely feel like you have your stuff together and it will show to others.

This choice will empower you to take back your life and consistently make positive patterns and routines that promote your well-being rather than ones that compromise your health. Take two minutes the next time you wake to meditate. You will begin the journey to manifesting your destiny.
